From Accra to Lagos: Expanding Across West Africa
A look at Shadar's journey from our first market in Accra to our growing presence in Lagos, Kumasi, and Abuja.
When we launched Shadar in Accra, we had a simple hypothesis: if we built a platform around how people actually discover and buy fashion in West Africa, it would resonate. We started with a handful of vendors in Kantamanto and a small group of early users in East Legon and Tema.
The response was immediate. Within weeks, word of mouth drove growth beyond what any marketing campaign could achieve. Buyers loved that they could snap a photo of something they wanted and receive real offers from local vendors. Vendors loved that every request represented a real customer.
Encouraged by the early traction, we expanded to Kumasi, where the fashion scene has its own distinct character. Kente cloth artisans, contemporary designers, and traditional market vendors all found a new channel to reach customers who might never visit their physical shops.
Lagos was our next milestone. Nigeria's fashion capital presented both opportunity and challenge. The market is larger, more competitive, and more diverse. We launched carefully in Lekki and Victoria Island, working with vendors in Balogun and Wuse markets.
The pattern repeated: genuine demand from buyers tired of the traditional e-commerce experience, and enthusiastic adoption from vendors who saw the value of intent-driven commerce. Today, we're serving buyers and vendors across all four cities, with more on the horizon.
Each city teaches us something new. Accra showed us the power of community-driven growth. Kumasi taught us about artisanal commerce. Lagos demonstrated the scale of demand. And Abuja revealed how the model works in a more spread-out urban landscape.
We're just getting started. West Africa's fashion ecosystem is vast, vibrant, and underserved by existing technology. Shadar's mission is to make local fashion accessible to everyone, everywhere — and every new city brings us closer to that goal.
